Hospitalists of West Michigan (HOWM) originated in 1989 as an inpatient service simply known as "In House Internists" (IHI), a team of physicians providing patient care to the Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus. In 1995, the term "hospitalists" was coined to describe the specialized type of physician services delivered by IHI. Six years later, HOWM was developed to expand the continuum of care at both the Spectrum Health Blodgett and Butterworth Campuses.

As our name states, HOWM hospitalists specialize in medical care within the hospital system. Our team of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and clinicians works tirelessly to ensure that every patient, every day receives the highest caliber of care possible. This synergy is what makes us different and strong: HOWM stops at nothing to deliver everything a plan of care requires - 24/7/365. We complete patient admissions, monitor care and progress, coordinate and consult with specialists, and maintain close relationships with patients, families and primary care doctors. In doing so, we remain completely focused on patients while they're under our hospital care.
